In every machining process, there is a factor that is rarely visible but has a direct impact on productivity, part quality, and operating costs: the heat generated in the cutting zone.

As the cutting tool interacts with the material, friction generates temperatures that can exceed 300°C (572°F), concentrating precisely where the tool performs the cutting operation. At these temperatures, conventional coolant loses much of its ability to protect the process, accelerating tool wear and reducing machining performance.

Why Conventional Coolant Is No Longer Enough

In standard-pressure coolant systems (100 to 300 psi), the coolant often evaporates before it reaches the point where it is needed most. As a result, the cutting tool operates under unfavorable thermal conditions.

When heat remains concentrated in the cutting zone, several issues arise that directly impact production:

Accelerated wear of inserts and cutting tools.

Formation of long chips that are difficult to evacuate.

Inconsistent surface finishes.

Increased machine downtime due to more frequent tool changes.

Higher risk of scrap and rework.

In other words, heat doesn’t just affect the cutting tool—it compromises the stability of the entire machining process.

The Difference Is Reaching the Cutting Zone

High-pressure coolant systems completely change the way coolant interacts with the machining process.

Operating at pressures of 1,000 psi or higher, the coolant is able to penetrate directly between the cutting tool and the workpiece, even in areas that conventional systems cannot reach.

This targeted delivery provides significantly more efficient cooling by rapidly dissipating the accumulated thermal energy and maintaining a stable temperature at the cutting edge. In addition, the force of the coolant helps break chips into smaller pieces, making chip evacuation easier before they can interfere with the cutting tool.

Lower Temperatures Mean Higher Productivity

When heat is no longer a limiting factor, the benefits are reflected across virtually every machining performance indicator.

Extended Tool Life

By significantly reducing temperatures in the cutting zone, premature wear on inserts and cutting tools is minimized. Depending on the application, tool life can increase by up to 13 times, substantially lowering tooling replacement costs.

Improved Chip Control

Short, broken chips are easier to evacuate, reducing chip packing, preventing damage to the workpiece, and minimizing unnecessary machine downtime.

Superior Surface Finish

A cutting tool operating at a controlled temperature maintains a more consistent cutting geometry, resulting in improved surface finish and greater dimensional accuracy.

Faster Machining Processes

With effective thermal control, cutting speeds and feed rates can often be increased by 20% to 30%, reducing cycle times without compromising machining quality.

Thermal Control Also Improves Profitability

Although high-pressure coolant systems are often associated primarily with lubrication, their greatest contribution is effective temperature control throughout the machining process.

Reduced tool wear, fewer tool changes, lower scrap rates, and more stable production frequently allow manufacturers to achieve a return on investment in less than 12 months across many industrial applications.

Turning Heat into a Competitive Advantage

In manufacturing, controlling heat means controlling the process.

High-pressure coolant systems deliver coolant precisely where the greatest thermal load is generated, improving lubrication, enhancing chip evacuation, and protecting cutting tools throughout the entire machining cycle.

When temperature is no longer a limitation, productivity increases, quality remains consistent, and the cost per part decreases.

At HEMAQ, we help our customers integrate high-pressure coolant solutions that optimize the performance of their machining centers, enabling them to produce more parts with greater process stability and lower operating costs.

In modern manufacturing, every additional setup means more time, higher costs, and another opportunity for dimensional variation. As parts become increasingly complex and delivery schedules more demanding, relying on multiple machines to complete a single component is no longer a competitive strategy.

The OKUMA MULTUS B250II was designed to overcome this challenge by integrating turning, milling, and complex machining operations into a single platform. The result is complete part production with fewer setups, greater precision, and a far more efficient use of manufacturing resources.

More Than a Multitasking Lathe

The MULTUS B250II combines the capabilities of a CNC lathe, a vertical machining center, a horizontal machining center, and high-precision milling into one highly versatile machine.

This streamlined approach keeps the workpiece in a single setup throughout nearly the entire manufacturing process, minimizing repositioning while reducing cumulative errors between operations.

The result is not only improved part accuracy but also significantly less non-productive time on the shop floor.

Fewer Setups. More Production Time

One of the MULTUS B250II’s greatest advantages is its ability to reduce multiple setups.

By consolidating several machining processes into a single machine, manufacturers can:

Reduce setup times.

Minimize work-in-progress (WIP).

Increase machine utilization.

Shorten production lead times.

Improve repeatability from batch to batch.

For manufacturers producing complex components or operating in high-mix, low-volume environments, fewer setups translate directly into greater productivity and a stronger competitive advantage.

Built for Complex Parts

The MULTUS B250II features a 225° B-axis milling head, allowing complex machining from multiple angles without repositioning the workpiece.

Its H1 milling spindle delivers 12,000 rpm as standard, with an optional 20,000 rpm configuration. Combined with a 0.001° B-axis resolution and a compound Y-axis, the machine provides the precision required to manufacture highly complex components.

In addition, the main spindle includes full C-axis contouring capabilities, expanding the possibilities for simultaneous machining.

Precision That Remains Stable Throughout Production

Precision depends on more than machine rigidity. It also depends on how the machine responds to the thermal changes that naturally occur during production.

To address this challenge, the MULTUS B250II incorporates OKUMA’s Thermo-Friendly Concept, an advanced technology that maintains dimensional stability even as ambient temperatures fluctuate or during extended machining cycles.

The result is more consistent production, fewer manual compensations, and reduced scrap caused by thermal variation.

Automation Ready for the Future

Modern manufacturing continues to move toward greater automation and autonomous production.

In modern manufacturing, every minute of production matters. However, there is one factor that often goes unnoticed yet can directly impact CNC machine uptime: heat buildup inside electrical enclosures.

When internal temperatures exceed recommended levels, electronic components operate under increased stress, which can lead to premature failures, unexpected downtime, and higher maintenance costs. As a result, implementing an effective thermal management strategy has become essential for manufacturers seeking to maximize efficiency and operational reliability.

Why Is Temperature Control Important in an Electrical Enclosure?

Electrical enclosures house critical components required for CNC machine operation, including drives, power supplies, electronic boards, and control systems.

During continuous operation, these components generate heat that, if not properly dissipated, can result in:

Reduced service life of electronic components.

Increased risk of electrical failures.

Unplanned production downtime.

Loss of process stability.

Higher maintenance and replacement costs.

Maintaining a controlled temperature not only protects sensitive electronics but also contributes to the overall reliability of the machine.

The Advantage of a Sealed Cooling System

Unlike conventional ventilation methods that introduce ambient air into the enclosure, sealed cooling systems are designed to maintain a closed-loop cooling circuit.

This allows heat to be removed efficiently without compromising the protection of electronic components.

The result is a controlled environment that helps preserve the integrity of the electrical system, even in demanding industrial conditions.

More Than Cooling: A Protective Barrier

Beyond temperature control, a sealed cooling system provides additional protection for the electrical enclosure.

By preventing air exchange with the surrounding environment, exposure to the following contaminants is significantly reduced:

Industrial dust.

Moisture and condensation.

Metal particles and debris.

Process-related contaminants.

Airborne particles that can affect electronic performance.

This added layer of protection contributes to more stable, reliable, and long-term operation.

A Direct Impact on Productivity

Effective thermal management has a measurable impact on key manufacturing performance indicators.

By operating within optimal temperature ranges, manufacturers can:

Increase Machine Availability

Fewer failures mean more productive uptime.

Reduce Maintenance Costs

Protecting electronic components minimizes the need for premature replacements and corrective repairs.

Extend Equipment Service Life

Electronic systems perform more efficiently and reliably when operating within proper thermal conditions.

Improve Operational Reliability

Stable temperatures help maintain the consistency, accuracy, and repeatability of manufacturing processes.

Built for Demanding Operating Conditions

During periods of elevated ambient temperatures or in applications with intensive duty cycles, the demands placed on electrical systems increase significantly.

Implementing a dedicated cooling solution helps maintain machine performance, protect critical components, and ensure operational continuity when it matters most.

An Investment in Reliability

Protecting a CNC machine involves more than mechanical maintenance. Thermal management is a strategic element for safeguarding your investment, maximizing productivity, and ensuring long-term operational performance.

PERIFERIQ cooling systems are designed to help manufacturers address these challenges through an efficient, reliable solution focused on protecting the components that keep production moving.

The Traditional Fragmented Process

LWhat is typically seen on the shop floor is a workflow divided by operation type: turning in one area, milling in another, drilling in a separate station. While common, this approach creates a chain of steps that add no direct value to the part:

Multiple setups

Intensive use of workholding tooling

Increased risk in tolerance control

It’s not that the model is “wrong,” but it is far from optimal.

The True Cost: What Isn’t Always Measured

The most critical problem is not always obvious at first glance. It’s not just about time—it’s the accumulation of inefficiencies:

Greater dependence on the operator

High consumption of floor space and labor

Difficulty maintaining precision on complex parts

The tighter the tolerances and surface finish requirements, the more these issues are amplified.

Resistance to Change: A Predictable Barrier

When the idea of migrating to multitasking machines is introduced, the response is often immediate:
“It’s too expensive” or “it’s too complex to operate.”

Both concerns are valid—but incomplete.

Yes, the initial investment is higher. And yes, the technology requires training. But what is often overlooked is the cumulative cost of continuing to operate under the same fragmented model.

When the Numbers Change: Real Cases

There are scenarios where multitasking is not just convenient—it’s decisive.

For example, parts with multiple operations and complex angular geometries that require a wide variety of tools. On conventional equipment, achieving precision without compromise is nearly impossible. However, with a machine like the MULTUS B250II, featuring 60 tool positions and simultaneous B-axis turning, the outcome is entirely different: precision, repeatability, and a drastic reduction in setups.

Another clear case: a turned part with a milling operation that accounted for 75% of the total process time. This bottleneck was only resolved by migrating to a machine like the VTM-YB, where both operations coexist within the same environment.

The Insight That Changes the Conversation

This is not just about selling a machine—it’s about rethinking the process.

Multitasking is not only for complex parts. It’s a platform capable of handling everything from simple geometries to highly demanding components, integrating operations, reducing errors, and optimizing resources.

But there’s something even more important: it’s not about leaving the customer alone with more advanced technology. The real value lies in ongoing support, continuous training, and ensuring the equipment is used to its full potential.

The question is not whether you can keep producing the way you always have.
The question is: how much is it costing you not to evolve?

In advanced manufacturing, every investment decision in CNC machines has a direct impact on competitiveness. Today, the challenge is no longer just about increasing output, but about optimizing CNC machining, reducing shop floor space, and minimizing reliance on highly specialized labor.

In this context, Okuma introduces a solution aligned with this evolution: the MULTUS U1000 and U2000, multitasking CNC machining centers recognized with the Best 10 New Products Award 2025, one of the most prestigious awards in global industrial innovation. Beyond recognition, these machines represent a shift in how processes are integrated within a single high-precision CNC machining center.

Less Space, higher productivity per square foot

One of the main bottlenecks in manufacturing is not always capacity, but floor space. Integrating more processes without expanding infrastructure has become a priority for CNC machining operations.

The MULTUS U1000/U2000 stand out with a compact footprint within the category of industrial CNC machines, enabling:

Integration of automated cells

Optimization of manufacturing layouts

Process integration: fewer setups, greater efficiency

In environments where cycle time is critical, reducing setups is essential.

In today’s industrial landscape, investing in CNC machinery is no longer just a technical decision—it is a financial, fiscal, and strategic move. Companies that successfully integrate these dimensions don’t just acquire equipment; they build sustainable competitive advantages.

The true return on investment (ROI) is not found in the machine’s price tag, but in how it performs within the company’s operational, financial, and tax ecosystem.

How to Evaluate a CNC Investment from a Financial Perspective

A solid evaluation should be built on six fundamental pillars.

First, the operational baseline. Every investment case must start with real shop-floor metrics: cycle times, scrap rates, rework, micro-stoppages, and especially OEE (Availability × Performance × Quality). OEE remains the industry standard for measuring true production effectiveness.

Next comes the financial model, where incremental after-tax cash flows are projected. Key indicators such as NPV, IRR, and payback period are calculated, properly incorporating tax depreciation and financing costs under applicable tax regulations.

The third element is the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). This goes far beyond the purchase price and includes installation, integration, energy, consumables, maintenance, spare parts, downtime, insurance, training, and residual value. The real question is not “How much does the machine cost?” but “How much does it cost to produce with it?”—measured in cost per productive hour or per good part.

Equally important is defining the financing structure, comparing outright purchase, debt financing, or leasing options. Each has different implications for cash flow and tax deductibility.

This is complemented by tax benefits, such as depreciation rates based on asset type or industry, as well as potential accelerated depreciation incentives available through government programs.

Finally, no evaluation is complete without a risk and sensitivity analysis, considering variables like production volume, pricing, exchange rates, energy costs, learning curves, and operational availability.

Common Financial Mistakes in Equipment Investment

Many investment decisions fail not due to lack of capital, but due to flawed assumptions.

One of the most common mistakes is focusing on price rather than TCO. In reality, energy, maintenance, and especially downtime have a far greater impact on profitability.

Another frequent issue is overestimating production capacity due to poorly calculated OEE, ignoring available tax incentives, or selecting financing structures that are misaligned with actual cash flow generation.

Underestimating the cost of production stoppages is also a critical and often overlooked error.

The Price Myth: The Least Relevant Indicator

While it often dominates initial discussions, the purchase price is one of the least relevant factors over the asset’s lifecycle.

Over time, most costs are driven by operation: energy consumption, maintenance, and losses due to downtime. That’s why the focus must shift toward TCO and residual value—the real drivers of ROI.

When an “Attractive ROI on Paper” Becomes a Problem

A project may look highly profitable in theory and still fail in execution.

This typically happens when operational assumptions are weak—such as inflated OEE, overly optimistic ramp-up periods, or unaccounted scrap and rework. It can also result from omitted costs like tooling, integration, or training, as well as poorly structured tax assumptions.

Another common issue is misaligned financing, where debt or lease payments exceed the cash flow generated during the ramp-up phase.

TCO: The Metric That Truly Matters

Total Cost of Ownership is defined as all costs associated with acquiring, operating, and maintaining a machine over its useful life, minus its recoverable residual value.

Expressing TCO in terms of cost per productive hour or per good part allows for objective comparisons and better decision-making based on real efficiency—not perception.

The Machine Is Not the Process

One of the most critical conceptual mistakes is evaluating the machine in isolation.

ROI depends on the entire system: bottlenecks, material flow, inspection processes, tooling changes, and workforce capabilities. A faster machine does not guarantee higher productivity if the rest of the process is not aligned.

The Rise of Specialized Financing

Industrial companies face clear challenges: high capital expenditure, cash flow pressure, long approval cycles, demand volatility, and technological obsolescence risks.

In response, specialized financing solutions have emerged, enabling companies to align payment structures with the asset’s cash generation, incorporate critical services, and account for residual value—capabilities that traditional financing often lacks.

How Specialized Financing Accelerates Decisions

This type of financing offers several key advantages.

It allows for payment schedules aligned with production ramp-up, including grace periods or step-up structures.

It enables leasing models with purchase options, often bundled with maintenance and training services to ensure equipment availability and reduce downtime risk.

Most importantly, it enhances tax efficiency by leveraging depreciation strategies and potential accelerated deductions, improving NPV and IRR through earlier tax shields.

Financing vs. Using Cash or Traditional Credit

Choosing financing over using internal capital has important implications.

From a liquidity standpoint, it preserves cash and short-term credit lines for working capital needs. From a tax perspective, it can provide advantages depending on the structure—through depreciation and deductible interest or lease payments.

It also ensures better alignment between payment obligations and actual cash flow generation, reducing both financial and operational risk.

A Message for Executive Leadership

Delaying investment also has a cost.

Every month without CNC technology means continuing with current levels of scrap, cycle times, and downtime. In many cases, the cost of not investing exceeds the cost of financing.

When combined with the right financial structure and tax incentives, companies can capture productivity gains immediately without straining cash flow.

Tax Considerations in Mexico and Their Impact on ROI

Mexico’s tax framework provides important tools to enhance the profitability of industrial investments.

Investment deductions allow companies to apply maximum depreciation rates based on asset type or activity, reducing taxable income. The original investment amount includes not only the equipment price but also installation, freight, and setup costs.

There are also accelerated depreciation programs available through government decrees for specific sectors and timeframes, allowing companies to bring forward tax benefits and significantly improve financial metrics.

In financial leasing, the asset is depreciated for income tax purposes, and interest is deductible, while VAT is triggered as payments are made.

From an accounting perspective, under IFRS/lease standards, companies recognize a right-of-use asset and liability, although tax treatment remains distinct.

Finally, recoverable VAT on equipment acquisition or leasing represents another key lever for optimizing project cash flow, provided compliance requirements are met.

The true industrial ROI is not found in a machine’s technical specifications or purchase price. It emerges when operations, finance, and tax strategy work in alignment.

Companies that understand this don’t just invest better—they grow faster, with lower risk and a more intelligent financial structure.
